Keep Supported WebP Animations Moving
When the browser exposes WebCodecs, the converter reads each supported WebP frame and its duration, then creates an animated GIF. The result reports its frame count so you can verify that motion was preserved.
Get an Explicit Still-Frame Warning
Browsers that cannot inspect animated WebP frames can still create a GIF from the visible frame. The result states that limitation instead of silently presenting a flattened animation as complete.
Use GIF for Older Workflows
GIF remains common in older publishing systems, email tools, forums, and chat workflows. A converted GIF can be easier to upload where WebP is rejected.
What the Browser Tool Keeps and Changes
GIF Uses a Limited Color Palette
The encoder uses up to 255 colors. Photographs, shadows, and smooth gradients can show banding compared with the WebP source, so inspect the preview before downloading.
Animation Has Browser Safety Limits
Animated conversion supports up to 200 frames, 4096 pixels per edge, 16 megapixels per frame, and 24 million total frame pixels. Larger animations are rejected instead of being partially encoded.
Metadata Is Not Copied
The result is rebuilt from decoded pixels and frame durations. WebP metadata and color-profile records are not carried into the GIF.
