AVIF Is Efficient But Not Universal
AVIF compresses far better than JPG at similar visual quality, which is why sites increasingly serve it. The trade-off is support: plenty of desktop photo editors, older phones, print workflows, and document tools still cannot open an AVIF file at all. Converting to JPG trades file size for the ability to actually use the image.
When JPG Is the Right Target
Choose JPG when the file needs to go somewhere you do not control — an email attachment, a print shop, a marketplace listing, or an older application. JPG is the most broadly readable photographic format available, and it is the safe default when compatibility matters more than bytes.

The image is decoded and re-encoded locally using your browser's own canvas. Nothing is uploaded to a server, which is why the conversion is instant and why the file stays on your device. One image at a time, up to 10 MB.
Expect the File to Get Larger
Because AVIF is more efficient than JPG, the converted file is usually bigger than the source — sometimes substantially. The size comparison is shown after conversion so you can see the change before downloading, and you can lower the quality setting if size matters.
Transparency Is Flattened
AVIF supports transparency and JPG does not. Any transparent areas are flattened onto a white background during conversion. If you need to keep transparency, convert to PNG instead.
