What AVIF is, and why a JPG is easier to use
A new format that tools are still catching up with
AVIF is based on the AV1 video codec and often produces the smallest files of any web image format. Chrome added it in 2020, Firefox in 2021 and Safari in 2022. Many editors, social platforms and upload forms still do not accept .avif.
Why it ends up on your computer
Sites that serve AVIF and browser Save as commands give you an .avif file that Photos, Preview or older editing software will not open. A JPG removes the problem.
Things to know
Your browser must read AVIF
The conversion uses your browser to decode the image, so a very old browser that cannot display AVIF will show an error. Update the browser or try Chrome.
File size and transparency

How do I open an AVIF file?
Modern browsers open AVIF directly. For apps that cannot, convert it to JPG here and open the result.
Why can I not upload AVIF to some websites?
Many upload forms and social platforms only list JPG, PNG and sometimes WebP, and reject AVIF. Convert to JPG to meet the requirement.
Is AVIF better than JPG?
It produces smaller files at similar quality, but JPG is supported by almost everything, which is why conversion is common.
Does AVIF to JPG lose quality?
A little, since JPG is lossy. At quality 85 or higher the difference is rarely visible.
What about transparency?
Transparent areas turn white in a JPG. Use AVIF to PNG to keep it.
Is the image uploaded?
Your browser decodes the AVIF and writes the JPG locally, so the file is never uploaded.
