Pixel to Print Size Calculator
Convert image pixels to a physical print size at a chosen PPI, or work backward from inches or centimeters to the pixel dimensions a print needs. The calculator does not resample or alter an image.
How to calculate image size for printing?
- 1
Step 1: Choose a calculation direction
Start with image pixels to find a print size, or start with a physical print size to find the pixel dimensions you need.
- 2
Step 2: Enter dimensions and PPI
Provide the width, height, and target pixels per inch. Common planning values include 150 PPI for some distance-viewed prints and 300 PPI for many close-viewed photo prints, but the print provider’s specification is the source of truth.
- 3
Step 3: Use the calculated target
Compare the result with the original image and the printer’s requirements. If you need to resize, preserve the aspect ratio and inspect a proof before ordering a final print.

How do I convert pixels to inches for printing?
Divide each pixel dimension by the target pixels per inch. A 3000 × 2400 pixel image at 300 PPI calculates to 10 × 8 inches. At 150 PPI, the same pixels calculate to 20 × 16 inches, but each printed inch contains fewer source pixels.
How do I calculate the pixels needed for a print?
Multiply the physical width and height in inches by the target PPI. An 8 × 10 inch print at 300 PPI needs 2400 × 3000 pixels before accounting for any bleed or provider-specific crop.
What is the difference between PPI and DPI?
PPI describes how many image pixels are assigned to each printed inch. DPI describes a printer’s physical ink or toner dots per inch. People often say DPI when planning an image file, but pixel-to-print calculations use PPI.
Is 300 PPI always required for printing?
No. 300 PPI is a common target for close-viewed photo prints, but acceptable resolution depends on viewing distance, print process, paper, subject detail, and the provider’s workflow. Large displays viewed from farther away often use fewer pixels per inch.
Can changing the PPI value add detail to an image?
No. Changing resolution metadata without resampling does not create pixels. Resampling can increase pixel dimensions, but generated or interpolated pixels are not the same as detail captured in the original image.
Does the calculator include bleed and trimming?
No. It converts the finished width and height you enter. If a printer requests bleed, add the required physical amount to the document dimensions before calculating pixels, and follow that provider’s template.
Can I convert centimeters to pixels?
Yes. Choose centimeters in the print-to-pixels mode. The calculator converts centimeters to inches using 2.54 centimeters per inch, then multiplies by the selected PPI.
Does this calculator resize my image?
No. It only calculates print and pixel dimensions. Use an image resizer after you know the target dimensions, and keep the original file so you can compare the resized result.
