What a JFIF File Actually Is
JFIF and JPG Are the Same Format
JFIF stands for JPEG File Interchange Format. It is not a different image format from JPG — it is the standard container that essentially every JPG already uses. A file ending in .jfif contains ordinary JPEG data. The only real difference is the extension, which is why the image looks identical before and after conversion.
Why You Ended Up With a .jfif File
JFIF files usually appear when saving an image from a browser, most often Chrome or Edge on Windows. A registry association causes the browser to write .jfif instead of .jpg. The image is fine; it is the extension that confuses other software, which is why the file may refuse to open or upload.

A Note on Quality

What is a JFIF file?
JFIF (JPEG File Interchange Format) is the standard container format for JPEG image data. Almost every .jpg file on your computer is technically a JFIF file. When a file is saved with the .jfif extension instead of .jpg, the contents are identical — only the extension differs.
Why does Chrome save images as JFIF instead of JPG?
This is caused by a Windows registry association for the image/jpeg MIME type. When it points to .jfif, Chrome and Edge use that extension when saving images. It is a long-standing Windows quirk rather than anything wrong with the image itself.
Can I just rename .jfif to .jpg?
Yes, and in most cases that is the cleanest fix — the file data is already valid JPEG, so renaming the extension makes it open normally with no quality change at all. Use this converter when renaming is inconvenient, when you are on a device where changing extensions is awkward, or when you also want to change the quality or output format.
Does converting JFIF to JPG reduce quality?
The conversion re-encodes the image, which applies JPEG compression a second time. At the default quality this is generally not visible, though fine detail can soften very slightly. Renaming the file extension instead avoids any re-encoding.
