What a JFIF File Actually Is
JFIF and JPG Are the Same Format
JFIF stands for JPEG File Interchange Format. It is not a different image format from JPG — it is the standard container that essentially every JPG already uses. A file ending in .jfif contains ordinary JPEG data. The only real difference is the extension, which is why the image looks identical before and after conversion.
Why You Ended Up With a .jfif File
JFIF files usually appear when saving an image from a browser, most often Chrome or Edge on Windows. A registry association causes the browser to write .jfif instead of .jpg. The image is fine; it is the extension that confuses other software, which is why the file may refuse to open or upload.

The file is decoded and written back out as a standard JPG with a .jpg extension, so applications that reject .jfif will accept it. Because JFIF is already JPEG data, there is no format translation happening — just a re-encode and a correct extension.

A Note on Quality
Re-encoding a JPEG applies compression a second time. At the default quality setting this is usually invisible, but if you need a byte-identical file, simply renaming the extension from .jfif to .jpg in your file manager achieves the same compatibility fix with no re-encoding at all.
