Lossless Output, Transparency Intact
PNG is a lossless format, so converting from AVIF does not add a second round of compression artifacts on top of the ones already baked into the source. PNG also supports an alpha channel, which means transparent areas in the AVIF survive the conversion instead of being flattened onto a background colour.

If the image contains flat colour, text, sharp edges, or transparency — a logo, an icon, a UI screenshot, a diagram — PNG is the better target than JPG. JPG compression blurs hard edges and adds visible ringing around text, while PNG reproduces them exactly.

Does AVIF to PNG conversion keep transparency?
Yes. PNG supports an alpha channel, so transparent and semi-transparent areas in the AVIF are carried through to the PNG unchanged. This is the main reason to choose PNG over JPG as your output format.
Is converting AVIF to PNG lossless?
The PNG encoding step is lossless, so no new compression artifacts are introduced. However, any detail the original AVIF already discarded when it was created cannot be recovered — the PNG faithfully reproduces the decoded AVIF, not the image the AVIF came from.
Why is the PNG so much larger than the AVIF?
AVIF is a highly efficient lossy format and PNG is lossless, so the difference can be dramatic — a 500 KB AVIF photograph might become several megabytes as a PNG. If you need a smaller file and do not need transparency or exact pixels, convert to JPG or WebP instead.
Should I choose PNG or JPG for my AVIF file?
Choose PNG for graphics with transparency, text, or sharp edges, and when you need exact pixel fidelity. Choose JPG for photographs where a much smaller file matters more than perfect reproduction.
