What Is a WebP Image?

WebP is an image format developed by Google for the web. It supports both lossy and lossless compression, transparency, and animation, and it typically stores a photo in a noticeably smaller file than an equivalent JPG. Every current major browser can display WebP, which is why so many websites now serve it — and why images you save from the web so often turn out to be .webp files.
When Resizing Beats Converting
If a WebP file is simply too large in pixels — a 2400px product shot that needs to be 1080px, say — you do not need to change its format. Resizing keeps the size advantages of WebP. Convert only when a destination rejects the format outright, such as an older application or a print workflow that wants JPG.

One honest caveat: browsers that cannot encode WebP save the result as a lossless PNG instead, and the download filename reflects whichever format you actually received.
Fit or Fill the New Canvas
Fit mode keeps the entire image and pads the remaining canvas with transparent pixels; Fill mode covers the whole canvas and crops what overflows. Either way you can check the preview before downloading.
Transparency and Animation in WebP
Transparency Is Preserved
Like PNG, WebP supports an alpha channel, and this resizer keeps it: transparent logos and cutouts stay transparent after resizing, including any transparent Fit-mode padding.
Animated WebP Becomes a Still Image
WebP can store animation, but this tool resizes only the first frame — an animated WebP downloads as a single still image at the new size, not a resized animation. If your animation is a GIF, the GIF resizer handles animated files.
