Can you have a GIF with a transparent background?

Yes. The GIF format supports one transparent color, so a pixel is either clear or solid. Edges look harder than in a photo. For smooth, soft edges save the result as an animated WebP or APNG instead.

How do I make a GIF transparent?

Remove the background from each frame, then save the frames as an animation that keeps transparency. This tool does both: it cuts out every frame and exports GIF, WebP or APNG with a transparent background.

Is the GIF background remover free?

The first-frame preview is free without an account. Processing the whole GIF needs a free account and uses your daily allowance of 30 automatic cutouts, one per frame. Identical frames are only cut out once.

Why does my GIF only process some of its frames?

A GIF with more than 30 distinct frames would be over the free daily allowance, so the tool cuts out every second, third or later frame as needed and keeps the original timing. Trimming the GIF to 30 frames or fewer processes every frame.

The GIF is read and rebuilt in your browser. Each frame is sent as an image to the background-removal service to get its cutout, and it is not added to a public gallery.

Why do the edges flicker?

Each frame is cut out on its own, so a blurry or low-contrast edge can change a little from one frame to the next. A GIF with a clear subject and a plain contrast against its background gives the steadiest result.

WebP and APNG keep soft edges

Animated WebP and APNG store a full transparency value per pixel, so hair, fur and shadows fade out smoothly. Both play in current Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Edge. WebP files are much smaller, and APNG is lossless.

GIF works everywhere but has hard edges

A GIF can mark a pixel as fully transparent or fully solid, nothing in between. That is why transparent GIFs show a slight jagged outline on light or dark backgrounds. Choose GIF when an app only accepts GIF files.

A free account covers most GIFs
