What is a watermark?
Definition
A watermark is text or a logo placed on top of an image to show who owns it or what status it has, such as a proof or a draft. It is usually semi-transparent so the picture stays visible underneath.
Why it matters for sellers
Sellers share photos with buyers, clients and partners before a sale is final. A watermark on a proof discourages reuse and makes clear which image is a draft.
On a live listing it can backfire. Many marketplaces restrict or forbid watermarks, text and logos on the main product image, and a mark that covers the product hurts clarity. Check the marketplace's current image policy before adding one, and use plain, unobtrusive placement elsewhere.
How to do it with Instasize
The free Instasize Add Watermark tool places a custom text watermark on a JPG, PNG or WebP image, with a full-image preview before you save.
- Upload one JPG, PNG or WebP image.
- Type your watermark text and choose position, size, opacity and color.
- Check the preview for legibility without covering the product.
- Download the watermarked PNG and keep your untouched original.

Examples
Proof sent to a client
A photographer sends a draft product shot with a corner watermark that says Proof. The client reviews it, and the final file goes out clean.
Handmade shop credit
An Etsy seller adds a small shop name in the corner of photos shared on social media.
Listing image check
A seller prepares a main marketplace image and leaves the watermark off, since the marketplace's policy may not allow text on it.
Frequently asked questions
Does a watermark stop people from copying my photo?
It discourages casual reuse, but it does not prevent it. A mark placed across the subject is harder to remove than one in a corner.
Are watermarks allowed on marketplace listings?
Often not on the main image. Rules differ and change, so check the marketplace's current image policy.
Do Instasize downloads add a watermark?
No. Downloads from Instasize have no watermark unless you add your own.
Should I watermark the original file?
No. Keep an untouched original and apply the watermark to a copy.
