What is inpainting?

Definition

Inpainting is a technique that fills in a selected area of an image using the surrounding pixels and, in AI tools, a learned sense of what belongs there. It is used to remove unwanted objects or repair damage so the photo looks untouched.

Why it matters for sellers

Product photos often have small distractions: a price tag, a dust speck, a cable, a stray reflection or a wrinkle in the backdrop. Inpainting removes them without a reshoot, which keeps a catalog looking consistent.

It is also a way to alter a product by accident. If the fill changes a label, a stitch or a scratch the buyer should see, the listing no longer matches the item and can lead to returns. Always compare the result with the original and edit only what is not part of the product.

How to do it with Instasize

The Instasize Object Remover uses AI inpainting. You describe what to remove and it fills in the gap. It runs on credits on paid plans.

  1. Upload your photo to the Object Remover.
  2. Describe what to remove, such as a price tag or a cable.
  3. Review the result and zoom in on the filled area.
  4. Download the edit and keep your original.

Examples

  • Price sticker on a box

A seller photographs packaging with a sticker left on. Inpainting removes the sticker and rebuilds the printed surface behind it.

  • Dust on a dark surface

Specks of dust show on a black speaker. Removing them gives a cleaner hero image.

  • Cable in a lifestyle shot

A charging cable runs across a desk in a scene photo. The seller removes it so the product stands out.

Frequently asked questions

Is inpainting the same as the clone tool?

Not quite. A clone tool copies pixels from another spot by hand. AI inpainting generates new pixels to match the surroundings.

Can inpainting make mistakes?

Yes. Complex patterns, text and faces can come out wrong. Zoom in and check the filled area before you use the image.

Is it fine to remove flaws from a product?

Remove dust and clutter, not real defects or features. A listing photo should show the item as it is.

How is inpainting different from outpainting?

Inpainting fills a gap inside the image. Outpainting extends the image beyond its original edges.
