What is a pixel?

Definition

A pixel is the smallest single unit of color in a digital image. A photo is a grid of pixels, each holding one color. Image size is stated in pixels, such as 1200 wide by 1200 high, and more pixels give the image more room for detail.

Why it matters for sellers

Marketplaces and online stores ask for product photos in pixel dimensions. If your photo has too few pixels, it can be rejected, or it can look soft when a shopper zooms in. Knowing the pixel size of your photo tells you quickly whether it can meet a listing requirement.

Pixels are also the reason an image gets blurry or blocky when it is enlarged. Stretching a small photo past its pixel count does not add detail, it only spreads the same pixels over a bigger area. Shooting with enough pixels in the first place saves rework later.

How to do it with Instasize

Instasize shows you the pixel size of a photo and lets you set an exact pixel size for the result.

  1. Open the Image Dimensions Checker and add your photo.
  2. Read the pixel width and height it reports.
  3. Compare those numbers with the size the marketplace or platform asks for.
  4. Open the Image Resizer and enter the exact pixel width and height you need.
  5. Download the resized photo.

Examples

  • Phone photo of a ceramic mug

A phone photo can be several thousand pixels wide. A listing that needs a much smaller square only needs you to crop and resize, and the original pixels leave plenty of margin.

  • Screenshot used as a product image

A screenshot saved at a low pixel size looks fine on a phone but turns blocky on a large monitor. The photo has too few pixels for the space it is shown in.

  • Zoom on a jewelry listing

Shoppers zoom in to see a ring's stone. A photo with enough pixels stays crisp at that zoom, while a small one shows visible squares.

Frequently asked questions

How many pixels does my photo have?

Multiply the width by the height. A photo that is 4000 by 3000 pixels has 12,000,000 pixels, or 12 megapixels. The Image Dimensions Checker reads this for you.

Is a pixel a fixed physical size?

No. A pixel is a unit of data, not a unit of length. Its physical size depends on the screen or the print size it is shown at.

Does adding pixels make a photo sharper?

Not by itself. Resizing a photo to a larger pixel size creates new pixels by estimating them from neighbors, so it does not recover real detail. An AI upscaler can generate plausible detail, but the result is an estimate.

What is the difference between a pixel and a megapixel?

A megapixel is one million pixels. It is a way to describe the total pixel count of a photo or a camera sensor.
