What is image resolution?
Definition
Image resolution is the amount of detail an image holds. It is most often given as pixel dimensions, such as 2000 by 2000, or as total megapixels. In print, resolution can also mean pixel density, measured in pixels per inch.
Why it matters for sellers
Higher resolution lets shoppers zoom in on texture, stitching or a label and still see clean detail. Many marketplaces enable a zoom feature only when the image is large enough, so a low-resolution photo can lose that feature or look soft in a big view.
Resolution is not the same as quality. A large photo that is out of focus or badly lit is still a weak listing image. Good lighting and sharp focus matter first, and then enough pixels to carry that detail to the shopper.
How to do it with Instasize
Instasize helps you check the resolution of a photo and bring it to the size a listing needs.
- Open the Image Dimensions Checker and add your photo to read its pixel size.
- Compare it with the size the marketplace asks for.
- Resize with the Image Resizer if the photo is larger than needed.
- If it is too small, try the Image Upscaler to enlarge it with AI-generated detail.

Examples
Zoom on a leather wallet
A shopper zooms in to see the stitching. A high-resolution photo stays clear, while a small one shows soft edges.
Old supplier photo
A seller receives a small product image from a supplier. It is too low in resolution for the listing, so the seller reshoots it with a phone.
Large file, blurry photo
A photo has many pixels but was shot out of focus. The resolution is high, yet the image still looks blurry.
Frequently asked questions
Is resolution the same as file size?
No. Resolution is about detail, while file size is the storage the file takes. A high-resolution image usually has a larger file size, but compression also affects it.
What resolution should my product photos be?
Follow the marketplace's current image policy, and use our size guides for the working canvas. Shoot larger than you need so you can crop.
Can I increase the resolution of a photo?
You can add pixels by upscaling, but real detail cannot be recovered. AI upscaling generates plausible detail, which is an estimate.
How is resolution different from DPI?
Resolution as pixel dimensions describes the whole image. DPI only describes the density used for printing.
