Instagram image sizes in 2026

Instagram publishes a width and an aspect-ratio range for feed photos rather than one fixed size. This table gives the size to use for each placement, checked against Instagram's Help Center in October 2026.

Instagram image size requirements
ImageSize (px)What Instagram says
Feed post, square1080×10801:1. Inside Instagram's supported feed range.
Feed post, portrait1080×13504:5. The long-standing portrait size and inside the supported range.
Feed post, tall portrait1080×14403:4. The tallest ratio Instagram's Help Center supports for feed photos, and the shape of profile-grid tiles.
Feed post, landscape1080×5661.91:1. The widest ratio Instagram supports for feed photos.
Story1080×19209:16 full-screen vertical canvas.
Reel cover1080×19209:16. Prepares a still cover image; it does not process video.
Carousel1080 wideFollows the same feed range as single posts. The orientation chosen when you create the post applies to every item.

Instagram's Help Center says photos are uploaded at up to 1080 pixels wide. Photos between 320 and 1080 pixels wide keep their resolution if the ratio is between 1.91:1 and 3:4 (1080 wide and 566 to 1440 high). Smaller photos are enlarged to 320 pixels wide, larger ones are sized down to 1080, and unsupported ratios are cropped.

How do I resize an image for Instagram without cropping?

Instagram crops any feed photo whose ratio falls outside 1.91:1 to 3:4, and it does not warn you. To avoid it, give Instagram a ratio it accepts before you upload. Pick the ratio closest to your photo, resize to 1080 pixels wide, and check the preview.

If you must keep the whole picture and its shape is outside the range, use Fit in the resizer above to place it on a 1080×1080 or 1080×1350 canvas with a background colour, instead of letting Instagram cut it. Our guides explain why Instagram crops photos and how to keep Instagram from cropping photos.

4:5 or 3:4: which portrait size should I use?

Both are accepted. 1080×1350 (4:5) is the established portrait size and works everywhere. 1080×1440 (3:4) is the tallest shape Instagram's Help Center supports for feed photos and matches the taller 3:4 tiles on the profile grid, so it shows the most of a tall subject.

A 4:5 image in a 3:4 grid tile loses about 6% of its width (roughly 3% on each side); a square loses 25%, and a 1.91:1 landscape loses about 61%. Keep faces and text away from the left and right edges and the grid crop will not hurt. See the portrait post preset and the square post preset.

Instagram Story and Reel size: 1080×1920

Stories and Reels use a 9:16 canvas at 1080×1920. Interface elements such as the username, reply bar and buttons cover the top and bottom of the screen, so keep text and key details in the middle. Use the Story preset or the Reel cover preset. If a correctly sized Story still looks zoomed, read why Instagram Stories look big.

How to resize an image for Instagram, step by step

Upload your photo above, choose the placement (square, portrait, Story, Reel, carousel or profile), and move the crop until the subject is framed. Download the result, check it, and upload it to Instagram.

Instagram's own crop tool only offers a few ratios and cannot set exact pixel sizes, which is why resizing first gives you more control. See the guide to cropping photos for Instagram, and for carousels choose one ratio and apply it to every image, because Instagram uses one orientation for the whole post.

Why do my Instagram photos look blurry?

Two common causes. A photo under 320 pixels wide is enlarged, which cannot restore detail. A source that was already a screenshot, message attachment or social download is soft before Instagram touches it. Start from the original, export at 1080 pixels wide and avoid repeated edits. The guide to avoiding Instagram compression goes deeper.

About Instagram Image Sizes

Use this free Instagram image resizer to resize an image for Instagram feed posts, Stories, Reels, profile pictures, carousels, and Highlight covers. Choose the placement below to see a practical working size.

Whether you resize a photo for an Instagram feed post (1080x1080), a full-screen Story (1080x1920), or a Reel cover, a supported aspect ratio helps preserve the composition — no pixel size guarantees reach or prevents all platform processing. Start with a clear source and review the final preview in Instagram before publishing.

What is the best image size for Instagram in 2026?

For a tall feed post use 1080×1350 (4:5) or 1080×1440 (3:4). For a square use 1080×1080, and for Stories and Reels use 1080×1920 (9:16). No size guarantees reach, but these keep the photo inside Instagram's supported range.

What is the new size for Instagram images?

Instagram now supports feed photos up to 3:4, which is 1080×1440. The supported range runs from 1.91:1 landscape (1080×566) to 3:4 portrait, with a maximum uploaded width of 1080 pixels.

Is the new Instagram grid 4:5 or 3:4?

Profile-grid tiles are 3:4 since early 2025, while 4:5 (1080×1350) is still a valid portrait post size. A 4:5 post is trimmed by about 6% of its width in a 3:4 tile, so keep key details away from the side edges.

How do I get Instagram to stop cropping my photos?

Resize the photo to a ratio between 1.91:1 and 3:4 before you upload, for example 1080×1350, 1080×1080 or 1080×566. If your photo has a different shape, use Fit to add a background colour instead of cropping.

How do I get my whole picture to fit on Instagram?

Put the picture on a canvas Instagram accepts. Choose Fit in the resizer to keep the full photo and add borders to reach 4:5, 1:1 or 1.91:1, then upload that file.

How can I resize a photo to fit Instagram?

Upload it to the resizer on this page, pick a placement such as portrait post or Story, review the crop, and download the file. Resizing before you upload gives you more control than Instagram's own crop tool.

Is Instagram 4:3 or 16:9?

Neither is a fixed size. Feed photos are accepted from 1.91:1 landscape to 3:4 portrait, so a 16:9 landscape photo (1.78:1) is inside the range, and a 4:3 landscape photo is too. Stories and Reels are 9:16 vertical.

Can I upload a photo larger than 1080 pixels wide to Instagram?

You can, but Instagram says it sizes higher-resolution photos down to 1080 pixels wide. A larger file does not increase the published width.

Does Instagram have a minimum photo size?

Instagram says photos narrower than 320 pixels are enlarged to 320 pixels wide, which looks soft. Start with a photo at least 1080 pixels wide when you can.

How do I mix picture sizes in an Instagram carousel?

You cannot freely mix shapes. The orientation selected when you create a carousel applies to every item, so prepare each image for that one ratio. Apply the same preset to all of them and check each crop.

What image size presets are available for Instagram?

This page provides Instagram Square Post (1080x1080), Instagram Portrait Post (1080x1350), Instagram Story (1080x1920), Instagram Reel (1080x1920), plus 3 more. Open a preset to see whether its dimensions are a documented requirement, recommendation, minimum, or practical working canvas.

Is the Instagram image resizer free?

You can open the Instagram resizer and upload an image on the web. The editor will show any sign-in or usage limit that applies before processing.

Will resizing reduce my image quality?

Resizing can reduce detail, especially when a small source image is enlarged. Start with the highest-resolution image available and review the result before using it for Instagram.

Can I resize multiple images at once?

This resizer processes one image at a time. Choose the Instagram format you need, review the result, and download it before starting another image.
