How to Check Image Dimensions on Any Device

Image dimensions are the width and height of a picture in pixels, usually written as width × height. A 1080 × 1920 image is 1,080 pixels wide and 1,920 pixels tall. You can find those numbers in the file details on a computer or in the information panel of a phone's photo app.

Check Image Dimensions on Windows

1. Open File Explorer and find the image.
2. Right-click the file and select Properties.
3. Open the Details tab.
4. Look for Dimensions, Width, and Height under the image section.

File Explorer can also show dimensions as a column. Switch the folder to Details view, right-click a column heading, and enable Dimensions if it is available.

Check Image Dimensions on a Mac

1. Find the image in Finder.
2. Select it and press Command-I, or right-click and choose Get Info.
3. Expand More Info if that section is closed.
4. Read the pixel dimensions shown there.

You can also open the image in Preview and choose Tools → Show Inspector. The inspector displays pixel dimensions along with other file information.

Check Image Dimensions on iPhone or iPad

1. Open the image in Photos.
2. Tap the information button or swipe up on the photo.
3. Find the width and height in the image information.

If a downloaded image does not show useful information in Photos, save it to Files, press and hold the file, and open its information panel.

Check Image Dimensions on Android

The menu name varies by gallery app, but the process is similar:

1. Open the picture in Google Photos or the device's Gallery app.
2. Swipe up or open the three-dot menu.
3. Choose Info, Details, or an equivalent option.
4. Look for a pair of pixel values such as 3024 × 4032.

Check the Dimensions of an Image on a Website

The browser may display an image at a different size from the underlying file. To inspect the original, or intrinsic, dimensions:

1. Right-click the image and open it in a new tab when the site allows it.
2. Open the browser's developer tools and inspect the image element.
3. Compare the image's intrinsic width and height with its rendered width and height.

In a browser console, an image element's naturalWidth and naturalHeight properties report its intrinsic pixel dimensions. Its displayed CSS size can be smaller, larger, or cropped without changing the source file.

Image Dimensions vs. File Size

Dimensions and file size measure different things:

• Dimensions describe pixel width and height, such as 1200 × 628.
• File size describes storage, such as 450 KB or 3 MB.
• Aspect ratio describes the shape, such as 1:1, 4:5, or 16:9.
• Print resolution is commonly expressed in pixels per inch and matters when converting pixels to a physical print size.

Two images with identical dimensions can have very different file sizes because their formats, compression settings, transparency, and visual detail differ.
