How to Search Filters on Instagram (2026 Guide)

Instagram's built-in camera filters only show a handful of options by default. A fuller library lives in the Effects Gallery, which you have to open and search separately. Here's where to find it, how to browse by category, and one other way to pick up a filter you spot in someone else's Story.

Note: Meta shut down Spark AR — the platform independent creators used to build and publish third-party effects — on January 14, 2025. Effects made by outside creators are no longer available on Instagram, so the Effects Gallery today surfaces Meta-made effects only.

  1. Open Instagram and tap the camera icon (top-left) or swipe right from your home feed to open the Story/Reel camera.
  2. Scroll all the way to the end of the filter tray at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Tap the magnifying glass icon — this opens the Effects Gallery.
  4. Browse by category (Trending, AR, Beauty, Fun, Vintage, and more) or type a keyword or creator name into the search bar at the top.
  5. Tap a filter to preview it on your own camera, then tap Try It to test it live or Save Effect to add it to your filter tray for later.

Saved effects appear at the end of your regular filter tray in both the Story and Reel camera, so you don't have to search for a favorite filter twice.

Save a Filter From Someone Else's Story

If you see a filter you like while watching a Story:

  1. Tap the filter name shown in the top-left corner of the Story (it appears alongside the creator's username).
  2. A menu pops up with Try It and Save Effect options.
  3. Tap Save Effect to add it directly to your own camera tray — no need to search for it by name afterward.

Why You Might Not See a Filter

A few common reasons a filter search comes up empty:

  • It was a third-party effect. Effects built by independent creators (rather than Meta) were removed from Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger when Meta shut down the Spark AR platform on January 14, 2025 — they're no longer available to apply to new content, even if you used one before.
  • It's region-locked. Some Meta-made AR effects are only available in specific countries.
  • You're searching in the wrong camera mode. The Effects Gallery only appears from the Story/Reel camera, not from the main feed's photo/video capture screen.

If you already used a since-removed effect in an old Story or Reel, that existing post isn't affected — the effect just can't be applied to anything new.

Finishing the Edit After You Apply a Filter

Instagram's filters are designed to be quick and applied in-camera, which means limited control over intensity, color grading, or combining effects. If you want to fine-tune a shot after applying (or instead of) an Instagram filter, the Instasize photo filters give you:

  • 130+ filters and adjustable presets you can layer and control the strength of, rather than an on/off in-camera effect.
  • Manual controls for saturation, contrast, warmth, and grain so you can match a look precisely instead of settling for the closest built-in filter.
  • Magic Fill to adjust the frame of a photo you've already shot, without needing to retake it in-app.

Instasize works on iOS, Android, and web, so you can apply a finished look before you ever open Instagram's camera.

FAQs

Where exactly is the Instagram Effects Gallery?

Open the Story or Reel camera, scroll to the end of the filter icons at the bottom of the screen, and tap the magnifying glass. That opens the full searchable library of filters and AR effects.

Can I search for filters by name?

Yes. The Effects Gallery has a search bar at the top where you can type a filter name, style, or creator's username.

How do I save a filter I saw in a friend's Story?

Tap the filter's name in the top-left corner of their Story, then tap Save Effect. It's added straight to your camera tray.

Why can't I find a specific filter I've seen before?

If it was made by an independent creator rather than Meta, it was likely removed in Meta's January 2025 Spark AR shutdown. Otherwise, it may be restricted to a different region, or you might be searching from the regular feed camera instead of the Story/Reel camera, where the Effects Gallery lives.

Do saved filters expire or disappear?

No — once you save an effect, it stays in your camera tray until you remove it or the creator deletes the filter entirely.
