Does Discord Compress Images? What Actually Changes

Discord's video-quality settings do not apply to ordinary image uploads. Images can still be sent at lower quality when Data Saving Mode is enabled in the mobile app and you are using a cellular network. A smaller chat preview also does not necessarily mean that the attachment itself was reduced to that preview size.

That distinction matters: there is no universal "Discord compresses every image" rule. The result depends on how you upload the image, your mobile data setting, and whether the file fits your account's current upload limit.

When Discord Can Lower Image Quality

Discord documents two different mobile settings:

  • Video Upload Quality compresses videos according to the selected quality. Discord explicitly says this setting does not apply to images.
  • Data Saving Mode sends images and videos in lower quality while the device is on a cellular network. Discord's current help page says images are sent at 360p in that situation.

If an image sent from your phone looks unexpectedly soft, check User Settings → Data Consumption → Data Saving Mode. Turning that setting off, or uploading over Wi-Fi, avoids that documented mobile reduction.

Upload Limits and Image Previews

Discord's File Attachments FAQ currently lists a 10 MB maximum for non-Nitro uploads, while noting that Discord experiments with different limits for some users. It also explains that an image larger than 10 MB may appear as a downloadable attachment instead of an inline image.

An inline preview is designed for the chat interface. If exact detail matters, download the attachment before judging its dimensions or sharpness.

How to Share a Clear Image on Discord

  1. Start with a clean source. Repeatedly saving a low-quality JPEG can introduce artifacts before Discord ever receives it.
  2. Use Wi-Fi or disable Data Saving Mode. This prevents Discord's documented cellular image reduction.
  3. Fit the upload limit deliberately. If the file is too large, use the image compressor instead of repeatedly exporting at random quality settings.
  4. Use a link when you do not need an attachment. For a non-sensitive image, an image link generator can create a public viewing-page URL to paste into chat. Anyone with that link can view and download the image, so do not use it for private files.
  5. Resize for the actual placement. Use the Discord banner resizer for a server banner, the Discord avatar resizer for a personal profile image, or the Discord server icon dimensions for a community icon. The Discord image size guide compares the remaining layouts, while the Discord profile picture dimensions explain avatar-specific size and file guidance.
  6. Add alt text when appropriate. Discord supports image descriptions for people using screen readers.

PNG is useful for graphics with flat colors or sharp text, while JPEG is usually more compact for photographs. Changing formats is not a guaranteed way to bypass Discord behavior; choose the format that suits the image and produces an acceptable file size.

Does Nitro Prevent Image Compression?

Nitro provides a larger upload allowance, but it does not change the separate Data Saving Mode behavior described in Discord's mobile guidance. A larger allowance can help you avoid manually reducing a large source file, but you should still check the mobile data setting when quality matters.

The Bottom Line

Discord does not document blanket default compression for every image attachment. Its video compression controls are for videos, while mobile Data Saving Mode can lower image quality on cellular connections. Prepare a clean file, stay within your current upload limit, and download the attachment when you need to inspect the delivered image rather than its chat preview. For transfer options beyond Discord, compare the broader methods for sending high-quality images without relying on a chat attachment.
