Best background remover apps (2026)
Facts checked September 2026
Every background remover produces a decent cutout now; the model stopped being the differentiator a while ago. What differs is what you may do with the result — how big the free output is, whether each removal spends a credit, and whether you get a real transparent PNG.
Two free tiers here look alike in marketing and are nothing alike in practice. remove.bg removes backgrounds without limit but caps free output at 0.25 megapixels, roughly 625 × 400. Photoroom returns up to 750 × 550 px on mobile and counts every export against 50 a month. Canva has no free tier for this at all: its Help Center states background remover is included with paid plans. Six tools and five published limits each follow, checked in September 2026.

Why people switch
- The free output turns out to be a preview: 0.25 MP, or 750 × 550 px, is too small for a post or a listing.

The verdict
Pick by meter, not by model. For a handful of big cutouts at a predictable price, remove.bg is clearest: 1 credit per image, up to 50 MP, and credits that never expire. To stop removals being a line item, Pixelcut publishes unlimited removal on a flat plan, and Photoroom charges no credits for it on paid plans while counting exports instead. If the cutout is one step in a posting workflow — cut out, size to the placement, batch the rest — Instasize keeps that surrounding work free and local, which is the part the specialists charge for. Canva is the outlier: capable, but a paid plan comes before your first usable cutout.
