Instagram keeps a running list of who and what you've searched for, and shows it back to you every time you tap the search bar. Clearing it takes under a minute, whether you want to wipe everything or just remove a few entries.
Clear All Search Suggestions on Mobile
- Open the Instagram app and tap the search (magnifying glass) icon at the bottom of the screen.
- Tap the search bar at the top — your recent searches appear below it.
- Tap "See all" next to Recent Searches to view the full list.
- Tap "Clear all" in the top-right corner, then confirm.
You can also get there through your profile: tap the menu icon (☰) → Your Activity → Recent Searches → Clear All.
Clear One Search Suggestion at a Time
If you only want a specific person, hashtag, or place off the list:
- Open the search bar so your recent searches appear.
- Find the entry you want to remove.
- Tap the X next to that entry. It disappears immediately — no confirmation needed.
Clear Search Suggestions on Desktop
- Go to instagram.com and log in.
- Click Search in the left-hand menu.
- Your recent searches appear below the search box — click Clear all above the list, or hover over an individual entry and click the X next to it to remove just that one.
Set Instagram to Auto-Clear Your Search History
Instead of clearing your history manually, you can have Instagram do it automatically:
- Go to your profile and open Settings.
- Tap Accounts Center → Your information and permissions → Search history.
- Under "Keep searches for," choose how long Instagram should retain your search history — options include shorter windows like 3, 7, or 14 days instead of the 30-day default.
FAQs
Does clearing my search suggestions delete my Instagram activity everywhere?
No. It only clears the local list of recent searches shown in the search bar. It doesn't affect your posts, likes, follows, or accounts. Clearing Instagram's cache is a separate troubleshooting step for temporary app files.
Will clearing search suggestions stop Instagram from recommending content?
Not directly — Instagram's Explore and suggested-accounts algorithms use a much wider set of signals than just your search bar history, so clearing it won't meaningfully change your recommendations.
Can other people see my Instagram search history?
Other Instagram accounts can't see it — search suggestions are tied to your own logged-in session, not visible to anyone else's account. But on a shared or borrowed device where you're still logged in, anyone who picks it up and opens the search bar can see your recent searches. Clear your history (or log out) before handing over a shared device if that's a concern.
Is there a way to stop search history from building up in the first place?
Yes — set a short auto-clear window (3 or 7 days) in Accounts Center so Instagram wipes your recent searches on a schedule instead of letting them accumulate.
