Here's a question for you - how many times have you edited an image, are ready to post, but can't think of a solid + engaging caption for your followers? If you're anything like us, the answer is EVERY TIME! And how frustrating can that be?!

Because Instagram is a visual platform, the significance of a good Instagram caption often gets overlooked. In essence, Instagram is a visual storytelling platform. Without paying attention to the text, the whole process is incomplete. Good Instagram captions will not only give your image a bit of context, but it also helps you connect with your followers on a more personal level and encourages engagement.

Need some Instagram caption ideas? Here’s a list that may help you when it comes time to caption your next Instagram post:

1. Take NOTES

As a creative genius would tell you, you can’t rush the creative process! Similar to how you wouldn’t make an Instagram post on a whim, you also never want to post a caption without giving it much thought – or worse, not having a caption at all.

It takes time to come up with good Instagram captions. Make sure to write down any Instagram caption ideas that may pop into your head spontaneously. We've found that inspiration can strike at any given moment, get into the habit of saving quotes, lyrics, pieces of conversation, etc. within the notes section of your phone. That way when it comes time to write your next caption, you'll have a plethora of options stored and ready for posting.

Pro Tip: Take some time to look into how to turn a good caption into a great caption - check out these 1000+ examples from our friends over at Kicksta!

2. Give Your Audience Context

A picture might be worth a thousand words, so why not have a photo AND a caption that really resonates and shares a story? This will aid in making your brand appear more personable.

Connecting with your audience on a deeper level is what increases engagement. Use your caption as an opportunity to help your audience understand why you made this post, or what’s the story behind the image.

With a detailed post, try to place the most important information at the beginning. With longer captions, the cut-off point for what’s readily displayed is three to four lines. Social media has definitely given us all a shorter attention span, so keep that in mind when crafting your caption.

Photo by Michael Yamashita @yamashitaphoto | The “Borderless” exhibition, Mori Building, Odaiba, Tokyo. To call the exhibits at the teamLab Digital Art Museum immersive is an understatement, as the goal of the designers is to dissolve the imaginary walls between art and the viewer. The new museum, which opened last summer in Tokyo’s Odaiba district, is a two-floor series of rooms filled with psychedelic shape-shifting light shows and projections, most of which can be altered by touching the wall where they appear. The title of the exhibition is "Borderless," which defines the philosophy of teamLab, a 400-person cooperative of artists, designers, programmers, engineers, and architects, all dedicated to smashing preconceived boundaries, stimulating the senses, and blending the traditional with the futuristic. Unlike in most museums, photography is encouraged. In fact, the museum has been described as “the most Instagrammable spot” in Tokyo. It’s also one of the hardest exhibits to leave, as it is like finding the exit of a maze. #borderless #odaiba #tokyo

5. Use Hashtags, But Be Tasteful About It

If executed properly, hashtags can be a powerful tool to extend the reach of your posts to larger audiences. The right hashtags will connect your content with the people that will be interested, which in turn will bring you more followers. You're going to want to do some research on which hashtags within your specific niche are generating more traffic over others - avoid generic hashtags. And remember, Instagram allows you to post up to 30 hashtags per image, we recommend sticking these hashtags at the very end of your caption and/or posting them as a comment the second your post goes live.

6. Add Emojis

Emojis are a great way to add some personality to your caption. Short Instagram captions can fun and witty. The perfect execution will convey a tone that’s personable and light-hearted, but still manages to align with your brand voice. We recommend sprinkling a couple of these within your posting schedule, your captions don't always have to be long and thought provoking, sometimes a simple one liner and your favorite emoji will do the trick!
